The entire Satmar Community mourns the passing of Grand Rebbe Moses Teitelbaum who died on April 24, 2006 at the age of 91.  Since 1980, the Rebbe has been the spiritual leader of the Satmar Chasidic movement with over 150,000 followers worldwide.

The Grand Rebbe was born in Siget, Romania and after the Holocaust, immigrated to America, where he established a Congregation in Brooklyn, NY.  Following the death of his sainted uncle, Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, he was installed as the Satmar Rebbe.

In keeping with Orthodox Jewish Custom, the Grand Rebbe’s funeral was held just 3 hours after his death.  He was eulogized by his children and other religious luminaries at funerals in both Williamsburg and Kiryas Joel.  Over 50,000 mourners, including Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg, attended the Brooklyn funeral service.  His funeral service in Kiryas Joel was attended by an additional 25,000 mourners.  At 5:00 AM, the Grand Rebbe was laid to rest in the cemetery of Congregation Yetev Lev of Kiryas Joel, beside his late uncle, Grand Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum, for whom the Village is named.

The Grand Rebbe is survived by 6 children and dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Ironically, the Grand Rebbe’s passing occurred on the day of the birth of his first great great granddaughter.

The children of the Grand Rebbe will observe the traditional 7-day mourning period at their homes in Kiryas Joel and Brooklyn.  May their families and the entire Satmar Community be comforted among the mourners of Tzion and Yerushalayim.
